the weekend + committing to...

i didn't have big plans for the past weekend, and i'm glad: on friday night, i started to feel the beginnings of a cold, and by saturday i was good for about an hour outside at the farmer's market before i had to come home and curl up in bed for the next day and a half. add to that a strange reaction to some cold medicine (is this what happens when you get older?) and -- most importantly -- the deep-rooted feelings of sadness i've been having over what's going on in japan (it just seems unthinkable), and i'm glad friday, saturday and sunday were quiet.

i'm feeling better today, but not great, and i'm looking forward to crawling into bed early and getting a full night's sleep. and in that vein, this week, i'm committing to making little healthy changes and hoping they stick.

+ trying to swap out green tea for coffee, at least for awhile. i love coffee, but i've really been enjoying all the green tea i've been guzzling lately. at the very least, cut my coffee intake down to one cup in the morning.

+ up the fruit-and-veggie intake; cut back on the processed stuff. i did that this weekend and i really think it's helped me kick the cold a bit more quicky.

+ go.to.bed.earlier. regular readers of this series know that this is something i really struggle with, so any going-to-bed early tips are appreciated.

+ wake up earlier so i can actually enjoy my cereal (and maybe even make a smoothie!) at home instead of grabbing a cup of yogurt as i whirl out the door like the tazmanian devil.

+ take advantage of the longer days and the absolutely beautiful weather, and feel grateful for everything i have, because -- as we've all rediscovered over the past four days -- it can disappear in an instant.

+ once i'm feeling better, do at least three days of the 30 day shred, which i've been doing for months but only sporadically. my arms need toning and it's almost bathing suit season.

it's an ambitious list, but i think these are all symptoms of a bigger desire i have, now more than ever, to live well, and live in the moment.

how about you? what are your goals for the week? xoxo

  1. Your weekly commitments always inspire me to be a little better...they're wonderful. What happened in Japan is truly unthinkable, and of course I'm hugging my kids a bit tighter these days. Have a great week!

  2. I am absolutely POSITIVELY behind you on this list....I desperately need some tricks at getting in bed earlier...and easing into a better way up routine! Hang in there...and hope you feel better soon! xoxo {av}

  3. hmm, a tip for going to bed earlier -- exercise in the evening! Even if it's just doing a handful of jumping jacks, I think getting that energy out will help you be tired/sleepy more quickly.

  5. I hear you on getting ambitious with the lists. We have to live the best life we can and sometimes that means pushing ourselves a little.

    For going to bed early: Take a bath. Read something good, but uninspiring. (I get completely energize if I read books that I find inspiring right before bed and then I can't sleep.) Don't drink caffeine past 2 or 3pm.

    Ugh...swimsuit season. Hello, gym! xoxo
